Lava flowed and bubbled around a small, perfectly crescent-shaped island north of Bowser’s Kingdom, where two figures overlooked the fiery sea. One was a rather tall figure, with a faraway look in his eyes, as if lost in thought. The other was a Koopa, shorter than the stranger, but still quite tall for his species, with his oddly shaped green hair adding to his height. The figure was the first to speak: ‘So, Iggy, is this the resting place of the legendary Black Tower you spoke of?’ ‘You bet it is!’, the Koopa responded with the enthusiasm of a child who just got a new toy. ‘This place apparently holds limitless evil power that it grants to whoever raises the Tower, and-‘ Iggy was interrupted by his strange companion: ‘Interesting. Have you verified this information?’ The Koopaling nodded frantically. ‘Yep! I did my research, you know. Dad told us to never come to this place, but this might be our only shot at finally beating Mario!’ The stranger’s eyes lit up, and he finally broke his gaze away from the ocean of lava before him, looking directly at Iggy. ‘Tell me more about this… Mario.’ The green-haired Koopa almost instantly lost his enthusiasm, and he sighed before beginning his story: ‘Mario… he’s the biggest meanie in the whole wide world. Every time we try to do something, be it kidnapping the Princess, taking over the world, or even winning a kart race, he’s always there to ruin our day. We just can’t do anything about him, which is why I need this Tower to power me up! I won’t leave anything to chance this time!’ The stranger snickered, fixing his gaze back on the lava. ‘I’m afraid you misinterpreted me when I said I required your help, Iggy. I merely needed you to show me the Tower’s resting place. Now that you have fulfilled your purpose, I no longer need your help. The Black Tower will be mine, and mine alone.’ He stepped forward while Iggy was still processing what was just said, and spread his arms, exclaiming: ‘Ancient evil of the Mushroom World! Heed my call, and rise before your new Master!’ It was at this point that the reality of the situation dawned on Iggy Koopa. He was betrayed, and the ancient evil was soon to be unleashed upon the world once more! ‘H-hey, wait! This wasn’t part of our deal!’ he shouted, shooting a green fireball from his wand at his former companion. However, dark forces erupted from the lava around them, deflecting the projectile effortlessly and binding Iggy. The traitor turned around, a confident smirk on his face. ‘There never was a deal. You were so delightfully ignorant. I almost felt bad, knowing you trusted me like that.’ ’Stop… please…’ the helpless Koopa sobbed, but his desperate pleas fell on deaf ears, almost literally, as the fiery sea below them parted to reveal a jet-black structure, rising far beyond the clouds, almost touching the heavens themselves. As the tower of legend rose, the figure was laughing maniacally, dark powers flooding his body. Eventually, a grand door rose to the island’s level, opening before the Black Tower’s new Master. Releasing Iggy from his bonds, the figure spoke: ‘You have no further business here. Leave, and face the consequences of your actions.’ Iggy, realizing that he couldn’t possibly hope to face the full power of the new Master alone, nodded nervously, and ran for his airship, desperate to get away, not only from the Master, but also from his father, who would no doubt punish him severely. Meanwhile, the now empowered figure entered the Tower, admiring its dark halls, which were still in perfect condition despite centuries of having remained hidden underneath the lava. The door shut behind him, a mysterious barrier materializing around it as its numerous locks fell into place, sealing the Tower to all but its Master. ‘Now…’ the figure said, to no one in particular, ‘Let's set my plan in motion.’
A couple hours later, the dominion of the Black Tower had already been established, its shadowy forces having overrun the entire Mushroom World. Using his dark powers, the Master overlooked the numerous attacks that he himself ordered. Yet, as he took a look at the Mushroom Kingdom, his forces were suffering numerous casualties at the hands of a single, red-clad man who seemed unstoppable, mowing down the dark forces without so much as an afterthought. ‘So this is the ‘Mario’ Iggy told me about…’, the Master mused, observing the red hero’s actions. ‘Impressive work so far. It seems I underestimated your abilities. I’ll be looking forward to our confrontation, Hero of the Mushroom Kingdom! Don’t keep me waiting…’
